La Romana
La Romana is a province with an exceptional development and thanks to this it has become a very important tourist pole for the region. Rio Higuamo Wildlife Refuge (La Fuente de Oro)
As natural resources we can point out the "Fountain of Gold", a beautiful and crystalline spring that emanates from an underground river that emerges between rocks. It is located in the "Higuamo River Wildlife Refuge" and is in the custody of the rangers of the Ministry of Environment. For photography enthusiasts, in this protected area you will find a great diversity of wild birds and others that are released here so that they can reproduce naturally. With luck and a good camera the visitor will be able to capture some of them.
Laguna Mallén Wildlife Refuge
One of the most impressive places in San Pedro de Macorís is the Mallén Lagoon. In it you will feel that it is far from civilization, thanks to a stillness only altered by the singing of the wide variety of birds that inhabit it, and find some that cannot be seen anywhere else in the eastern region.
With more than 8 km in route, it is the largest protected area of San Pedro de Macorís. In the middle of the lagoon there is a small island called "Isla de la mujer", where the forest rangers live in a wooden hut. They are very friendly, hospitable and always ready to guide visitors. The name of the island is due to the fact that it is home to the country’s only female forest ranger.
Soco River Wildlife Refuge
Just after the new bridge of the Soco River, on the road from San Pedro to La Romana, you will find the Soco River Wildlife Refuge, a place of pure and beautiful nature, also with a small cabin for the rangers in charge of the protection and care of the area. It has a swimming pool, a flowery garden with picnic tables, pruned grass and mahogany trees. Ideal for an unforgettable day.
